2024

Zoom calls are scheduled approximately monthly for the OOIFB.

  • May 16, 2024 – Janet Nye and Rosie Gradoville are appointed to the OOIFB and filled the positions vacated by Ruoying He (North Carolina State University) and John Wilkin (Rutgers University), who had both served two terms on the OOIFB.
  • April 2, 2024 – A joint meeting of the OOIFB and DSC is announced for May 7-9, 2024, at the NSF Offices in Alexandria, VA.
  • March 29, 2024 – A call for applications is announced to fill two membership positions that will open as of June 1, 2024 (John Wilkin and Ruoying He will be stepping down after two, full terms on the OOIFB).
  • March 26, 2024- Applications deadline for the 2024 Pioneer MAB Array Community Workshop. Sixty-three applications are received by the deadline. The application remains open as presenters are finalized.
  • February 29, 2024 – OOIFB endorses the DSC Annual Report.
  • February 20, 2024- OOIFB holds Town Hall at the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting in New Orleans, LA.  The agenda and presentations are posted on the Town Hall webpage.  About 70 people participated, with questions asked in person during the interactive panel discussion about OOI data use, as well as through the online form.
  • February 8, 2024 – Applications open for the 2024 Pioneer MAB Array Community Workshop.
  • January 18, 2024- The second Larry P. Atkinson Travel Fellowship is awarded to Meg Yoder (Boston College). Funding supported Yoder’s travel/attendance at the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting where she presented her research on net community production and inorganic carbon cycling in the Irminger Sea.
  • January/February 2024- the Pioneer Workshop Planning Committee continues to meet biweekly to finalize agenda plans.

2023

Zoom calls are scheduled approximately monthly for the OOIFB.

  • December 11, 2023 – OOIFB Charter and Terms of Reference are finalized by NSF.
  • December 7, 2023- A Community Workshop for the Coastal Pioneer Array is announced. The event, which will take place September 10-12, 2024, at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. It will bring together a diversity of scientists, resource managers, educators, and other stakeholders to learn about the capabilities of the Pioneer Array and the cutting-edge research that can be done in its new location (Southern mid-Atlantic Bight). The workshop will also provide a forum to facilitate cross-network collaborations, identify strategies for better engaging current and future users of NSF OOI, and foster the research and proposal development process.
  • November 28, 2023 – Details for the Town Hall event at the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting in New Orleans, LA are announced. The Town Hall is scheduled for Tuesday, February 20, 2024, from 12:45 – 13:45 CST. During the first half of the Town Hall event, the community will have the opportunity to hear the latest information about the OOI facility and learn about NSF updates. The second half of the Town Hall will be comprised of an interactive, panel discussion: Enhancing your Science with OOI Data: A Community Discussion about Maximizing OOI Data Use. The goal of this community-focused conversation is to discuss how current OOI data access and usage can be refined and/or expanded to better meet research and education goals.
  • November 17, 2023 – Lynne Leonard (UNC), Donglai Gong (VIMS), and Margaret Mulholland (ODU) join the Pioneer Array Community Workshop Planning Committee. The planning committee agrees to meet on a biweekly basis to identify workshop goals and build a robust event agenda.
  • November 8, 2023- An updated Charter and Terms of Reference document is shared by NSF with the OOIFB and DSC for review and feedback.
  • November 1, 2023- Dax Soule becomes Chair of the OOIFB. He had previously held the position of Chair-Elect.
  • November 1, 2023- Kendra Daly assumes the role of Immediate-Past Chair with the OOIFB. She had previously been the Chair of the OOIFB since 2017.
  • October 10-12, 2023 – the OOIFB and DSC host their their fall meeting.  The meeting is held in person in Falmouth, MA (WHOI), with virtual participation also offered. Presentations and other details are posted to the 2024 Fall Meeting webpage.
  • September 12, 2023 – A planning committee is convened to begin discussions about a 2024 community workshop focused on the Coastal Pioneer Array (and its planned relocation to the Southern mid-Atlantic Bight).
  • September 5, 2023 – NSF endorsed the OOIFB’s selection of Mike Muglia.
  • August 31, 2023 – The OOIFB has selected Mike Muglia to join the OOIFB.
  • August 10, 2023- A “hold the date” date announcement is made for the OOIFB Town Hall event at the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting in New Orleans, LA.
  • July 17-21, 2023 – OOIFB hosts the OOI Bio-optics Sensor Summer School at OSU in Corvallis, OR.
  • July 2023 – The Ocean Sciences Meeting organizers accept OOIFB’s Town Hall abstract.
  • July 5, 2023 – A Call for Applications was announced to fill the remainder of Tim Crone’s term on the OOIFB.
  • June 7, 2023 – OOIFB submits their final AWP feedback document to NSF.
  • May 25, 2023 – OOIFB holds their spring meeting via Zoom with discussions on OOI’s response to the OOIFB comments and questions
  • May 18, 2023 – OOIFB submitted an abstract to host a Town Hall meeting at the 2024 February Ocean Sciences Meeting.
  • May 12, 2023 – OOIFB provided preliminary feedback to NSF regarding the OOI Annual Work Plan for Program Year 6.
  • May 8, 2023 – Tim Crone steps down as DSC chair and OOIFB member as he begins an NSF position.
  • March 30, 2023 – OOIFB endorses the DSC Annual Report and submits it to NSF.
  • March 30, 2023 – Al Plueddemann updated the OOIFB on the status of the Pioneer Array Relocation process.
  • February 6, 2023 – OOIFB provides NSF with the DSC Report, Results of the Second OOI Community Survey on Data Delivery Systems.
  • February 1-28, 2023 – The OOIFB hosted Sensor Summer School is announced and the application process is open.  The school will be held at OSU in Corvallis, OR on July 17-23, 2023.
  • January through Summer, 2023 – OOIFB Summer School planning group meets regularly to discuss logistics and the curriculum.
  • January 30, 2023 – An OOIFB subcommittee is formed to brainstorm strategies for better engaging the modeling community.  They meet periodically through the spring 2023.
  • January 26, 2023 – DSC delivered the Survey report to OOIFB for review.  The report includes finding and recommendations from the 2021/2022 community survey focused on OOI data delivery systems.
  • January 9 through spring 2023 – The OOIFB Charter Review subcommittee draft proposed revisions to the Charter and suggest changes to NSF’s OOIFB Terms of Reference document.  Periodic meetings are held.

2022

  • December 12, 2022 – OOIFB holds Town Hall at the AGU Fall Meeting.  The agenda and presentations are posted on the Town Hall webpage.  About 50 people participated.
  • December 12, 2022 – A “Hold the Date” announcement is made during the OOIFB Town Hall regarding a 2023 Sensor Summer School focused on the AC-S.  The proposed dates are July 17-21, 2023.
  • December 8, 2022 – An OOIFB Charter review subcommittee is formed and includes Dax Soule, Kendra Daly, Tim Crone, and Ed Dever.  The subcommittee will review and update the OOIFB Charter as needed in consultation with NSF and the full OOIFB.
  • November 22, 2022 – Chris Edwards (University of California – Santa Cruz) appointed to fill a vacancy position on the OOIFB.
  • November 3, 2022 – An organizing committee is formed and meets to plan a Sensor Summer School focused on the AC-S.
  • October 26-28, 2022 – DSC and OOIFB hold their fall meeting.  The meeting is held in person in Alexandria, VA with virtual participation also offered.
  • October 18, 2022 – The OOIFB Town Hall at the 2022 Fall AGU Meeting is announced and lightning talk applications are open.  The agenda and details are posted on the Town Hall webpage.
  • August 23, 2022 – Call for Applications are open to fill one open position on the OOIFB.
  • August 22, 2022 – Dax Soule is appointed to the Chair Elect position of the OOIFB.
  • August 1-5, 2022 – Elizabeth Ferguson, first recipient of the Larry P. Atkinson Travel Fellowship, makes a presentation at the Society for Marine Mammalogy conference.
  • June 13, 2022 – OOIFB provides feedback to NSF regarding the OOI 2.0 Annual Work Plan for Program Year 5.
  • June 7-9, 2022 – OOIFB hosts the Northeast Pacific OOI Community Workshop at the OSU Portland Campus Center, Portland, OR.  There were 105 participants, 66 in person and 39 virtual.
  • May 26, 2022 – The OOIFB Spring Meeting is held.  The meeting is virtual and focus is on the OOI Annual Work Plan for Program Year 5.  Participants include the OOIFB, DSC, NSF, and OOI Program representatives.
  • March 20, 2022 – Applications deadline for the Northeast Pacific OOI Community Workshop.  Eighty-nine applications are received by the deadline.  In-person capacity is met.  The application stays open for virtual participation and for a waiting list for in-person participants.
  • February 25, 2022 – OOIFB holds a Town Hall during the virtual 2022 Ocean Sciences Meeting.  More than 50 participants join.
  • February 14, 2022 – Applications open for the Northeast Pacific OOI Community Workshop.
  • January 12, 2022 – OOIFB Announces plans and dates (June 7-9, 2022) for a Northeast Pacific OOI Community Workshop

2021

  • December 14, 2021 – OOIFB holds a Town Hall at the 2021 Fall AGU Meeting in New Orleans, LA – in person and virtual.
  • December 7 & 8, 2021 – OOIFB holds Fall Meeting via Zoom web conference.
  • September 30, 2021 – The OOIFB report, Selecting the Next Location for the OOI Pioneer Array using a Virtual Lab Approach,is submitted to NSF.
  • September 28, 2021 – An abstract is submitted to host and OOIFB Town Hall at the 2022 Ocean Sciences Meeting.
  • September 23, 2021 – Paulinus Chigbu (University of Maryland Eastern Shore) appointed to fill a vacancy position on the OOIFB.
  • September 23, 2021 – The first Larry P. Atkinson Travel Fellowship is awarded to Elizabeth Ferguson (California State University San Marcos and the CEO and Founding Director of Ocean Science Analytics).
  • September 1, 2021, NSF and OOIFB endorsed the process for the OOIFB’s annual review of the OOI Operations & Management Annual Work Plan (AWP).  The AWP Review Process was posted on the OOIFB website.
  • September 2021 – Planning resumes for a Community Workshop focused on the Northeast Pacific OOI Arrays.
  • July 13 – August 15, 2021 – Call for Applications are open to fill one open position on the OOIFB.
  • June 21-25, 2021 – Phase 2 Pioneer Array Innovations Lab is held to collect recommendations on how the Pioneer Array configuration can be optimized at its new location in the Mid Atlantic Bight.  The Lab is virtual and hosted by the OOIFB and facilitated by Knowinnovations, Inc with 53 participants that included panelists, NSF, USCG, BOEM, NOAA, KI, and science participants.
  • June 4, 2021 – OOIFB provides feedback to NSF regarding the OOI 2.0 Annual Work Plan for Program Year 4.
  • May 26, 2021 – The OOIFB Spring Meeting is held.  The meeting is virtual and focus is on the OOI Annual Work Plan for Program Year 4.  Participants include the OOIFB, DSC, NSF, and OOI Program representatives.
  • May 12, 2021 – The Pioneer Array Location Selection Phase 2 Micro Lab is held. The Lab is virtual and hosted by the OOIFB and facilitated by Knowinnovations, Inc.   There are 93 participants.
  • May 3, 2021 -Applications to participate in the Pioneer Array Phase 2 Innovations Lab open.
  • April 30, 2021 – NSF announces that the next location of the OOI Coastal Pioneer Array is the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) and the move will take place in 2024. The geographic footprint championed during the NSF-sponsored Innovations Lab #1 is the region of the MAB between Cape Hatteras and Norfolk Canyon.
  • April 20, 2021 – A call for the applications for the first annual The Larry P. Atkinson Travel Fellowship for Students and Early Career Scientists is announced.
  • April 14, 2021 – An abstract for an OOIFB Town Hall is submitted for the 2021 Fall AGU Meeting.
  • March 15-19, 2021 -Phase 1 Pioneer Array Innovations Lab is held to provide recommendations on the next location for the Pioneer Array.  The Lab is hosted by the OOIFB and facilitated by Knowinnovations, Inc with 47 participants that included panelists, NSF, KI, and science participants.
  • February 17, 2021 – The OOIFB and DSC provide feedback to NSF on the OOI Mid-Award Review External Panel report.
  • January 31, 2021 – The application period to apply for the Pioneer Array Innovations Lab closes.
  • January 28, 2021 – OOIFB endorses the new name and Terms of Reference for the Data Systems Committee (DSC).  DSC replaces the DDCI Committee.
  • January 28, 2021 – The OOIFB Charter is revised with a new Annex I that contains the DSC Terms of Reference.
  • January 22, 2021 – OOIFB publishes The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Science Plan: Exciting Opportunities Using OOI Data
  • January 13, 2021 – The Pioneer Array Location Selection Phase I Micro Lab is held. The Lab is virtual and hosted by the OOIFB and facilitated by Knowinnovations, Inc.   There are 93 participants.

2020

  • December 22, 2020 – The process for selection of the next Pioneer Array location is announced.  Applications to participate in the Phase 1 Innovations Lab is open.
  • December 8, 2020 – OOIFB holds a Town Hall at the 2020 Fall AGU Meeting via Zoom.
  • October 13-14, 2020 – OOIFB holds Fall Meeting via Zoom web conference.
  • July 8, 2020 -The OOIFB sends NSF the DDCI Committee’s response to the OOI Program’s response to the 2019 DDCI report
  • June 2, 2020 – OOIFB provides feedback to NSF regarding the OOI 2.0 Annual Work Plan for Program Year 3
  • May 19, 2020 – John Wilkin (Rutgers University) appointed to fill a vacancy position on the OOIFB.
  • May 14, 2020 – The Larry P. Atkinson Travel Fellowship for Students and Early Career Scientists is established.
  • May 13-14, 2020 – OOIFB holds Spring Meeting via Zoom web conference.
  • March 2020 – On March 5th, the on-line application form for the OOI Community Workshop focused on the NE Pacific OOI Arrays was opened.  The workshop was scheduled for June 23-25, 2020 in Portland, OR.  On March 27th, the decision was made to postpone the workshop due to COVID-19 concerns.
  • Feb – Mar, 2020 – Call for Applications for 1 OOIFB open position Feb 19-Mar 20.  Appointment of Dax Soule (Queens College) confirmed as new member with 3-year term and accepts on March 27th.
  • February 20, 2020 – OOIFB holds a Town Hall at the 2020 Ocean Sciences Meeting in San Diego, CA.

2019

Webex calls are scheduled approximately monthly for the OOIFB and were held biweekly for the DDCI Committee.

  • December 30, 2019 – The OOIFB provides input to NSF regarding future OOI Annual Work Plans and the OOI Concept of Operations document.
  • December 24, 2019 – The OOIFB submits the DDCI Committee Report titled, Improving Ocean Observatories Data Delivery Systems and Procedures, to NSF.
  • December 9, 2019 – OOIFB holds a Town Hall at the 2019 Fall AGU Meeting.
  • November 13, 2019 – Kendra Daly is appointed as the new OOIFB Chair.  Larry Atkinson becomes the OOIFB Past-Chair.
  • November 12-13, 2019 – OOIFB and DDCI Committee meeting at NSF, Alexandria, VA.
  • May 31, 2019 – OOIFB provides feedback to NSF regarding the OOI 2.0 Annual Work Plan for Program Year 2
  • May 21-23, 2019 – OOIFB and DDCI Meeting at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA

  • April 2, 2024 – A joint meeting of the OOIFB and DSC is announced for May 7-9, 2024, at the NSF Offices in Alexandria, VA.
  • March 19, 2024- Karen Bemis volunteers to be DSC Associate Chair
  • March 1, 2024- The DSC Annual Report (2023) is delivered to NSF.

2023

Web conferences are held monthly.

  • Throughout 2023, DSC members provide feedback to the OOI Program on their Data Explorer tool and other data delivery systems.
  • December 2023 – The DSC begins discussions on a its Annual Report.
  • November 21, 2023 – The DSC review and discuss its updated Terms of Reference, as provided by NSF on November 8, 2023.
  • October 23, 2023 – The DSC hosts Carrie Wall (University of Colorado Boulder Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences/NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information) to give a presentation, “Passive Acoustic Monitoring Data Management and Cyberinfrastructure Development”, during their monthly web conference.
  • August 31, 2023 – The U.S. NSF endorses the appointments of Teresa Burlingame, (NEON/Battelle) and Tom Connolly (Moss Landing Marine Lab) to the DSC. Teresa’s term began October 2023, and Tom’s began in September 2023.
  • August 2023 – The NSF approved summary of DSC’s survey report is posted on the OOIFB homepage for public viewing.  
  • July 7, 2023 – A call for applications is opened to fill two open positions on the DSC.
  • May 19, 2023 – The OOIFB confirm Jim Potemra’s appointment as Interim DSC Chair, with endorsement from NSF.
  • May 12, 2023 – The DSC’s initial feedback to the OOI Annual Work Plan for PYVI is compiled with OOIFB’s feedback and sent to NSF.
  • May 8, 2023 – Tim Crone steps down as DSC Chair and OOIFB member as he begins an NSF position.
  • January 26, 2023 – DSC delivered their report, Results of the Second OOI Community Survey on Data Delivery Systems, to the OOIFB for review and endorsement. The report includes finding and recommendations from the 2021/2022 community survey focused on OOI data delivery systems.
  • January 9 through spring 2023 – The OOIFB Charter Review subcommittee draft proposed revisions to the Charter and suggest changes to NSF’s OOIFB Terms of Reference document. Periodic meetings are held.

2022

Web conferences are held monthly.

  • Throughout 2022, DSC members provide feedback to the OOI Program on their Data Explorer tool and other data delivery systems.
  • December 8, 2022 – The appointment of Shima Abadi to the DSC is approved.  Her term will begin in January 2023.
  • February through December, 2022 – DSC Chair and members evaluate survey data and prepare a report with findings and recommendations.
  • February 7, 2022 – The DSC Annual Report is submitted to NSF with planned activities for the upcoming year and recommendations.
  • January 28, 2022 – The DSC community survey closes and there were 62 responses.  The remainder of Year 4, DSC members evaluate the data and prepare their report.

2021

Web conferences are held monthly.

  • Throughout 2021, DSC members provide feedback to the OOI Program on their Data Explorer tool.
  • December 9, 2021 – The DSC survey focused on the OOI Data Explorer and other Delivery Systems opens to community.
  • December 1, 2021 – OOI Appointee, Craig Risien (OSU) replaces Anthony Koppers (OSU) on the DSC.
  • October 26, 2021 – DSC members provide feedback on the OOI demo of the Jupyter notebook proof of concept provided by Axiom.
  • July 13, 2021 – Karen Bemis, Rutgers University, is appointed as a new member of the DSC.
  • May 2021 – DSC members review and provide feedback to the OOIFB on the OOI Annual Work Plan for Program Year 4.  The DSC feedback pertains to the data delivery and cyberinfrastructure sections of the AWP.
  • April 23 – May 30, 2021 – Applications are open to fill one position on the DSC.
  • March 24, 2021 – The DSC begins work on a community survey focused on OOI’s Data Explorer tool.  This is a follow-up survey to the one conducted in 2019 on OOI data delivery systems.  This is the focus of the monthly DSC web conferences.
  • March 11, 2021 – The first DSC Annual Report is submitted to NSF.
  • February 17, 2021 – The OOIFB and DSC provide feedback to NSF on the OOI Mid-Award Review External Panel report.
  • January 27 & 28, 2021 – The DDCI Chair submits the Committee’s new name and Terms of Reference to the OOIFB for endorsement. (On January 28, 2021, the OOIFB endorsed the Data Systems Committee name and Terms of Reference.)  The members of the DDCI transition to the DSC membership.

  • Throughout 2020, DDCI Committee members provide feedback to the OOI Program on their new Data Explorer tool.
  • October 27, 2020 – OOI Appointee, Anthony Koppers, replaces Chris Wingard on the DDCI.
  • October 13 & 27, 2020 – DDCI Committee holds Fall Meeting via Zoom web conference.
  • August 26, 2020 – The DDCI Committee presents their proposed future focus areas to the OOIFB and NSF.
  • August 26, 2020 – The DDCI Committee proposes a new name to the OOIFB and NSF, “OOI Data Systems Committee.”
  • July 22, 2020 – Kristen Fogaren (Boston College) is appointed to the DDCI Committee.
  • July 2, 2020 -The DDCI Committee’s response to the OOI Program’s response to the 2019 DDCI report is sent to the OOIFB for endorsement.  OOIFB endorsed the DDCI Committee response and submitted it to NSF on July 8, 2020.
  • May 2020 – The DDCI Committee reviews and provides feedback regarding the OOI Annual Work Plan for Program Year 3.  They send their feedback to the OOIFB.
  • February 20, 2020 – DDCI Chair provides an update at the OOIF  Town Hall at the 2020 Ocean Sciences Meeting and presents a set of plots summarizing the community survey results.

2019

Web conferences are held biweekly to evaluate OOI data delivery and CI, review the community survey results, and complete their tasking to draft a DDCI committee report.

  • December 24, 2019 – The DDCI Committee Report titled, Improving Ocean Observatories Data Delivery Systems and Procedures, is submitted to NSF via the OOIFB.
  • December 9, 2019 – DDCI Chair provides an update at the OOIFB holds a Town Hall at the 2019 Fall AGU Meeting and presents a set of plots summarizing the community survey results.
  • November 12-13, 2019 – OOIFB and DDCI Committee meeting at NSF, Alexandria, VA.
  • June 30, 2019 – SWOT material provided to DDCI Committee from Tom Kearney.
  • May 2019 – DDCI Committee provides feedback to OOIFB regarding the data delivery excerpts from the OOI 2.0 Annual Work Plan for Program Year 2
