Dani Bailey (OOIFB ASO). Meetings will be held monthly via web-conference.
  • March 5, 2025 – The OOIFB-DSC Knowledge Base Subcommittee reconvenes to finalize its internal summary document that outlines key knowledge needed for effective participation in the OOIFB and the DSC. The FAQ document was reviewed/discussed at the November 2024 OOIFB-DSC meeting, and the subcommittee is working to integrate all edits and finalize the document.

Action: DSC-2025-01 (COMPLETE) – The DSC will provide an annual report to the OOIFB. The report will provide a summary of DSC meetings, activities, and recommendations.

  • A Google Doc was created. Activities and meetings from 2024 were listed. The committee discussed recommendations and future activities during their January and February 2025 web conferences.
  • February 25, 2025 – The DSC Annual Report was submitted to the OOIFB for review; the OOIFB endorsed the report on March 8, 2025.
  • March 10, 2025 – The OOIFB endorsed version of the DSC Annual Report was submitted to NSF.

Action: DSC-2025-02 (COMPLETE) Identify strategies for addressing the recommended DSC future activities.  These activities were highlighted in the 2024 DSC Annual Report.

  • February 20, 2025 – DSC members initially volunteered to lead discussions on strategies to address future committee activities. This would be further discussed during March and April web conferences.
  • May 6, 2025 – During the DSC working session of the in-person at Oregon State University, DSC members each volunteered to lead discussions on strategies to address future committee activities. A summary sheet of activities and DSC volunteers for each assigned activity was reviewed.
  • May 15, 2025 –  The summary sheet of activities and DSC volunteers was finalized, with a timeline and associated benchmarks, during the May 2025 DSC monthly Web Conference.

Action: DSC-2025-03 (COMPLETE) – The DSC will seek applications to fill an open position on the committee. DSC Member, Jacqui Degan, had to unexpectedly step down from her role with the DSC, and this search will identify candidates to fill that vacancy.

  • March 6, 2025- a call for applications opens to fill an open seat on the DSC.
  • April 24, 2025 – The DSC welcomes new member, Robert Fatland, to the committee. Rob is the Director of Cloud and Data Solutions at the University of Washington. His interest in expertise in data science as well as translating research details for public utility will only enhance DSC discussions and efforts to evaluate and recommend improvements to the data services policies and practices of the NSF OOI Facility that will lead to more efficient and effective scientific use of NSF OOI data. Rob fills a spot on the DSC that was open after Jacqui Degan had to unexpectedly step down for her role with the DSC.

Action: DSC-2025-04 (COMPLETE) – The DSC will seek applications to fill an open position on the committee. Dr. Kristen Fogaren will rotate off the DSC as of September 30, 2025, after serving two full terms, starting in July of 2020. This search will identify candidates to fill this vacancy.

  • August 5, 2025 – the DSC announces its call for applications to fill one open position, to start in October 2025.
  • October 1, 2025 – The DSC welcomes new member, Rebecca Hudak, to the committee. Rebecca fills a spot on the DSC that was open after Kristen Fogaren finished her second, 3-year term on the DSC.

Action: DSC-2025-05 (ongoing) –  The DSC will work with the PMO to reorganize the OOI data products page and make it a more useful, easy to navigate resource. The page will include what qualifies as a community data set, which is likely connected to a published research paper or data paper with DOI. Two categories of data sets will be created/linked: published data sets (PI provides DOI) and research data products without a DOI.

  • May 15, 2025 – Rob Fatland is identified as the DSC lead for this action item.

Action DSC-2025-06 (COMPLETE) –  Consider the implications and requirements of being part of OceanSITES

  • November 23, 2024 –  it is brought to the DSC’s attention that OceanSITES expressed interest for OOI participation. Some OOI nodes may already be part of OceanSITES but the full implications of participation have not been established. The DSC noted there are metadata conventions that OceanSITEs will require.
  • May 15, 2025  – The NSF OOI Coastal Global Scale Node (CGSN) Array team continues to work with OceanSITES on a “pilot case study” to get metadata for a couple of OOI sites listed correctly on OceanSITES. They found that there are three groups to coordinate with on these efforts: OceanSITES, OceanOPS, and OceanGliders. It was also acknowledged that OceanSITES was going through some changes as NOAA became more significantly engaged. The DSC would revisit the topic again in November 2025, as changes were not anticipated until that time.
  • December 18, 2025 – The DSC explored the implications of the NSF OOI joining the OceanSITES network.  It was not clear to the DSC how this would promote the NSF OOI, and it would require additional constraints on data formats and conventions.  It was also determined that some individual components were already listed in OceanSITES (e.g., components of PAPA).  The DSC concluded that the potential benefits of joining OceanSITES were not outweighed by the cost at the present time.

Action: DSC-2025-07 (COMPLETE) – Transfer the administration of the NSF OOI Zenodo community to the DSC.  George Voulgaris, Craig Risien, and Kristen Fogaren were listed as the initial administrators; the administration should go to an active DSC member(s).

  • November 20, 2025 – DSC Member, Tom Connolly, offers to take on an administrative role with the NSF OOI Zenodo Community
  • December 18, 2025 – Tom Connolly’s role as an account manager is confirmed. Tom is listed as a “manager” of the NSFF Zenodo; Craig Risien and George Voulgaris are listed as “owners”.

Action: DSC 2025-08 (ONGOING) – Develop a curation policy for the NSF OOI Zenodo Community to establish best practices for what is to be shared in the community and how.
