OOIFB Action Items – 2022

Action OOIFB-2022-1 (Complete) Plan an OOIFB Town Hall session for the 2022 Fall AGU Meeting.

Action Taken:

  • Annette DeSilva submitted the abstract to AGU on April 19, 2022.
  • AGU accepted the OOIFB Town Hall abstract for 2022 Fall AGU Meeting on July 14th.
  • On Oct 5th, AGU schedules OOIFB Town Hall scheduled for Monday, December 12th at 6:30 pm CT.
  • Oct 18th – Town Hall agenda and details are posted on OOIFB website. An email announcement is made along with a call for Lightning talks.
  • December 12, 2022 – The OOIFB hosts a Town Hall at the Fall AGU meeting. About 50 people participate. Updates are provided by the OOIFB Chair, NSF, and the OOI Program. There are 8 lightning talks highlighting science using OOI data. All presentations are available on the Town Hall web page.

Action: OOIFB-2022-2 (Complete) – Review and provide input to the 2022 OOI Annual Work Plan (AWP) for Program Year 5. 

Action Taken:

  • The PY5 OOI AWP with cost figures redacted was provided to OOIFB for review on April 21, 2022.
  • The OOIFB discussed the review process, assignments, and timeline during their April web conference.
  • Initial AWP feedback and questions from the OOIFB provided to NSF on May 13th.
  • May 26, 2022 – The OOIFB Spring Meeting focused on the OOI Annual Work Plan for Program Year 5.  Participants included the OOIFB, DSC, NSF, and OOI Program representatives. During the meeting, OOI provided responses to OOIFB’s preliminary feedback
  • June 13, 2022 – The OOIFB provided their final feedback to NSF regarding the OOI 2.0 Annual Work Plan for Program Year 5.

Action: OOIFB-2022-3 (Complete) – In accordance with the OOIFB Charter, appoint a Chair Elect to serve the final year of the current Chair’s Term. The current Chair’s term will end in November 2023/

Action Taken:

  • June 2023 – During the monthly web conference, OOIFB members are informed that a Chair Elect needs to be appointed and should be selected before November 2022.
  • July/August 2022 – OOIFB members approve the application of Dax Soule for Chair Elect. The selection is endorsed by NSF.
  • August 22, 2022 – Dax Soule is appointed as the OOIFB Chair Elect.

Action: OOIFB-2022-4 (Complete) – Announce a Call for Applications to fill an open position on the OOIFB.

Action Taken:

  • A Call for Applications was announced on August 23, 2022 to fill the remainder of Brian Glazer’s term on the OOIFB.
  • Applications will be accepted until filled.
  • November 22, 2022 – Chris Edwards is appointed to the OOIFB. His initial appointment will run from 11/2022 to 5/2023. He is eligible for two additional 3-year terms.

Action OOIFB-2022-5 (Complete) – Host an OOIFB Sensor School Pilot Program

Action Taken:

  • July 14, 2022 – A initial planning meeting was held with Kendra Daly, Annette DeSilva, Ed Dever, Chris Wingard, and Andrew Barnard to discuss the concept of a sensor summer school. The plan would be to hold a Sensor Summer School for five days in summer 2023 at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, for about 25 advanced graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and early career scientists.  This initial summer school will focus on the Seabird AC-S (OOI-OPTAA: optical attenuation and absorbance instrument) and will act as a pilot project for follow-on summer schools for other OOI sensors. 
  • Summer 2022 – Planning continues with drafting a project description, budget, and exploring meeting space and accommodations.
  • Fall 2022 – Organizing committee is formed and planning meeting is held on November 3rd. The Organizing committee includes:

  • Dec 2022 – Supplemental proposal is submitted to support the Summer School. The proposed dates for the Summer School are July 17-21, 2023.
  • Dec 12, 2022 – “Hold the Date” for the Summer School is announced at the OOIFB Town Hall during the AGU Fall Meeting.
  • Feb 1, 2023 – Announced the OOIFB Summer Sensor School and opened the application process. Followed up with weekly Tweets. 
  • Feb 28, 2023 – Deadline for applications, all applications reviewed.
  • March – Applicants were told if they were accepted to the Summer School.
  • March 9 – July 12, 2023 – Committee met regularly to plan and coordinate logistics, prepare resource material, and review curriculum ideas.
  • July 17-21, 2023 – OOI Bio-optics Sensor Summer School is held at OSU in Corvallis, OR.
  • Aug 2, 2023 – Post Summer School meeting of the organizers held. Participant evaluation responses were reviewed and lessons learned discussed.

Action: OOIFB-2022-6 (On-going) – OOIFB Charter Review – Review and update the OOIFB Charter.  Ensure that the OOIFB Charter is consistent with NSF’s OOIFB Terms of Reference.

Action Taken:

  • A Charter Review subcommittee was formed and included Dax Soule (Charter Review Chair), Kendra Daly (OOIFB Chair), Tim Crone (DSC Chair), Ed Dever.
  • The subcommittee met on 1/9/23 and on 2/24/23 to discuss suggested updates and changes to the Charter.  They recognize that NSF’s Terms of Reference (ToR) will need to be revised in order for the Charter and ToR to be consistent.
  • April 17, 2023 – The subcommittee sends suggested revisions to the ToR to NSF for consideration.
  • April 21, 2023 – NSF provides feedback regarding the ToR.
  • May 9, 2023 – Committee and NSF have a web conference to discuss Term of Reference revisions.
  • May 11, 2023 – Charter Review committee sends revised ToR suggestions to NSF
  • July 2023 – NSF’s updated version of the ToR is provided.
  • Sept 13, 2023 – Review NSF’s feedback and proceed
