- 3/9/2018 The OOIFB held a conference call on March 7, 2018 to discuss the OOI Engineering Change Request (ECR) 1300-00583: Pioneer AUV Sampling Modification. We feel that this type of request is exactly what should be happening as researchers learn about the capabilities of OOI. We heard from OOI personnel at WHOI who concurred that there would be minimal, to no impact on the OOI sampling schedules. OOIFB input to your request is that the ECR proposing AUV sampling changes to support an NSF-funded proposal by Dennis McGillicuddy and colleagues be approved.
Action: OOIFB-2018-2 (complete): AGU Fall Meeting Town Hall
- Identify an OOIFB member to draft an abstract for an OOIFB Town Hall. The abstract should be not more than 200 words and include a description of the target audience and goals. The Town Hall should focus on community engagement. The submitter must be an AGU member with dues up to date for 2018. Abstracts will be accepted from mid-June to 1 August, 2018 https://fallmeeting.agu.org/2018/town-halls/. If the Town Hall is accepted the OOIFB member will provide a leadership role in organizing the Town Hall.
- The OOIFB Town Hall was held on Dec 10, 2018. Larry Atkinson and Tim Crone led the discussions. The session included as series of Lightning talks by OOI users. About 90 people were in attendance. Audience real-time participation was enhanced by Sli.do poll during the Town Hall.

Northeast Pacific Partners Statement:
The OOI observing systems in the northeast Pacific provide long-term climate scale and geophysical observations that complement other long-term observing systems in the region. These systems include the following:
- Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems (NANOOS) that is part of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System supported mainly by NOAA,
- Ocean Station Papa operated by NOAA,
- Line P operated by the Canadian Institute of Ocean Sciences,
- Ocean Networks Canada that operates the Neptune cabled array on the northern end of the Juan de Fuca plate and Cascadia Margin as well as many other ocean observing systems throughout Canadian waters,
- Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS)
- And many others.
Since the goal of these projects is to make long-term measurements it could be beneficial to increase the level of coordination between the various organizations. The benefits of such coordination could, for example, include accelerating the development and sharing of best practices, reducing duplication of efforts, reducing ship time costs and assuring unbroken time series data sets, gaining lessons learned in instrumentation, and combined outreach efforts.
OOIFB encourages such coordination.
Action: OOIFB-2018-5 (complete): Transition from Voting to Non-Voting member
- OOIFB Voting Member, Kendra Daly, was transitioned to a non-voting OOIFB member for the period that she was supported by COL for OOI-related work. Work with COL ended on September 30, 2018, at which time Kendra transitioned back to an OOIFB voting member.

- OOIFB reviewed a draft Annual Workplan in mid-August and submitted a summary to NSF on August 20, 2018
Action: OOIFB 2018-8 (tabled): OOIFB should prepare a Ship Scheduling Statement regarding potential risk to the OOI program when cruises are scheduled outside of the weather window.
The OOI arrays require annual or biannual servicing for maintenance, repair, repowering, and replacement of systems and sensors. To accomplish these operations, the OOI program requests ship time, typically aboard vessels of the academic research fleet. These at-sea operations are required to ensure continued, high quality OOI data collection.
The OOI arrays are located in geographic regions significantly influenced by seasonal weather trends. The ability to service the arrays within the weather windows that are conducive to ship and over-the-side handling operations is important to optimize the success of array performance and data collection.
- In consideration of this topic, it was recognized that NSF representatives along with the UNOLS ship schedulers go to great efforts to schedule expeditions as close to the requested time periods as feasible. Limited ship availability along with weather constraints introduce challenges to their efforts. The schedulers and agency representatives work together to schedule ship and facility time so that it will optimize success of the planned operations. No action is required.
Action: OOIFB-2018-9 (ongoing): OOIFB should draft a Science Plan/White Paper:

On December 5th, the OOIFB reviewed Engineering Change Request (ECR) 1300-00625, OOI 2.0 Irminger glider sampling modification. Al Plueddemann provided background information regarding the ECR. OOIFB agreed that the ECR presented a practical approach for dealing with the glider power issue. OOIFB endorses ECR 1300-00625.
